Last month, AMEPA sent out an email asking for members to reach out to various healthcare and business groups and ask that they support HR-3790. Last week was the first time that the bill has not gained support while congress has been in session. Although the majority of the House supports the bill, there is still a lot we can do to persuade Congress that HR-3790 is the right solution to replace the flawed DMEPOS Bidding Program.

One of the most powerful national associations is Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA). Like our national association, they are located in Washington, DC, have national advocacy conferences in DC and have leadership speak at their events. Most recently Congressman Danny Davis (D-Chicago, IL), who serves on the Ways and Means Committee, spoke at their Washington National Issues Conference.

BOMA's Support of HR-3790

If BOMA was added as a supporter of HR-3790, it would give tremendous credibility to our argument. Please check the list of national commercial real estate management firms below. Some are on the Board of BOMA, but all are members. AMEPA asks all industry entities: DME providers, manufacturers, billing companies, distributors and repair centers; if your landlord is listed below or another national company not listed, ask that they send a letter to BOMA Vice President of Advocacy, Karen Penafiel, and ask that they write a letter to Congressman Meek supporting HR-3790.

A sample letter is attached

BOMA's Advocacy Approach:

Study Shows Broad Impact of Commercial Real Estate on Nation's Economy

The commercial real estate industry is a significant contributor to the nation's economic engine. In 2009, the office building industry contributed $118.4 billion to the U.S. economy. Real estate is one of the leading employers in the United States. Office building operations alone supported more than a million jobs in 2009. Firms in the commercial real estate industry employ building managers, asset managers, custodial staff, security staff, brokers and accountants and retain a myriad of other services through contract, such as legal consulting, landscape maintenance and window cleaning to name just a few. In addition, the five billion square feet of private office space located in the 91 markets served by BOMA's local associations provide work space for an estimated 21 million office jobs.

Did You Know?...

  • For each dollar of outlay for office building operations, workers in the U.S. realized an increase of 92 cents in personal earnings;
  • For each $1 million of outlay for office building operations, 24.4 jobs were supported nationwide;
  • For each dollar of outlay for office building operations, workers in the U.S. realized an increase of 92 cents in personal earnings;
